Ashenda Festival

The Ashenda Festival is an annual cultural celebration associated with northern Ethiopia especially the Tigray and Amhara regional states. The girls and young women who the festival is for, adorn themselves in dresses called ‘tilfi’ which is a cotton dress ornamented on the front with amazing embroidery from the neck to toe. They also wear their hair in the braided styles that have been developed for ages and ornament themselves in jewellery and Ashenda grass. The length of festival that usually takes place between August – September, varies from three days to one month depending on where in the region it is; shorter in urban areas, longer in rural areas. Customarily, people give them gifts in form of money, food and drinks. This goes on the entire day and throughout the festival period. To close the celebrations the women and girls convene in a central area to drum, dance, sing and socialize.

A unique colorful ceremony and one of the greatest festival in Northern Ethiopia . Ashenda is a girls and young women’s festival celebrated in northern Ethiopia among Orthodox Christianity followers. It is typically celebrated between 16-26 August every year. Its length varies from three days to one month depending on the locale. The holiday is mainly celebrated by Tigrayans.

The word Ashenda stands for the “tall green grass” which in the minimum has a 80-90 centimeter height. Making a miniskirt type of dress, girl, in the north, tie it around their waists while marking a special holiday – Ashenda – that derived its name from the grass .

Gathering in groups and going out into streets,they stage different traditional dances chanting heart titillating songs beating a special drum with their hands. As they go out at their best they lure the opposite sex, with peeled eyes who are alert to choose their best. In most cases the girls win suitors.

Itinerary

You will be met upon arrival and transferred to your hotel. Refresh and begin your sightseeing of Addis with a drive up to mount Entoto for a panoramic view of Addis. Descend down and drive to National museum where you will have a chance to spot the oldest hominids of ‘Lucy’ fossil. Visit and proceed to the Holy Trinity built during the WWII. Then proceed to Ethnographic museum, which use to be the palace of Emperor Hailesellase. To wrap up you drive to merkato, the biggest market in East Africa. Overnight in Addis.

You will be transferred to the airport for your flight to Mekele. Be met upon arrival and drive to Hawzen visiting en route the semi rock-hewn church of Wukro Cherkos. Then Abraha Atsbeha, the first church in Ethiopia. Its interior is painstakingly decorated. Finally you will have a stop at Dugum Sellase. Overnight in Hawazen.

After having your breakfast you will drive to the foot of Geraltha to visit the monastery of Debre Mariam Korkor, which dated back 6th century. After a few minutes’ walk from Mariam korkor you can visit the small rock church known as Abba Daniel's Prayer room. Then drive back to Hawzien. Overnight in Hawzen.

This day you will drive to Mekele. Upon arrival check-in to your hotel and then attain the colorful festival of Ashenda. Ashenda is a unique Tigraian traditional festival which takes place in August to mark the ending of fasting called filseta. This event is mostly for girls and young women, which they await very eagerly every year. It is unique to the people in the state of Tigrai in northern Ethiopia. The name of the festival "Ashenda" comes from the name of a tall grass that the girls make in to a skirt and wear it around their waist as a decoration. Overnight in Mekele.
